Morocco: Over 11,000 demonstrations recorded in 2023
The National Council for Human Rights in Morocco announced on Tuesday that the country witnessed more than 11,000 demonstrations in 2023, encompassing rallies in support of Palestine, protests by teachers, and others against rising prices.
Amina Bou Ayach, President of the Council, presented the annual report in Rabat, detailing the monitoring of 600 public demonstrations out of a total 11,086 gatherings across major streets, addressing issues including price hikes and the conflict in Palestine.
“The Council has observed 600 public demonstrations out of a total of 11,086 protests and gatherings on main streets protesting against price hikes and the war in Palestine, among others,” Bou Ayach remarked.
She emphasized the need to establish an effective national system for protecting economic and social rights, particularly concerning minimum standards of social security such as unemployment benefits, disability allowances, and workplace injury compensation.
In the past year, Morocco’s education sector saw strikes against a new law that “excludes” teachers from incentives and salary increases.
Meanwhile, inflation reached 6.1% in 2023, driven by rising commodity prices, notably in energy, prompting various sectors to demand wage hikes.
