Cape Verdean president congratulates Biden and American people on independence day

On the occasion of the 248th anniversary of the United States’ Independence Day, President José Maria Neves of Cape Verde extended his heartfelt congratulations to U.S. President Joe Biden and the American people.

In a letter addressed to President Biden, President Neves expressed his “congratulations” and “best wishes for health and success” to the President and the citizens of the United States.

“On this auspicious occasion, I reiterate my steadfast desire to deepen and consolidate the excellent, long-standing relations of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation for the benefit of our countries and our peoples,” wrote President Neves, emphasizing the enduring ties between the two nations.

A statement from the Cape Verdean presidency highlighted the historical and cooperative bonds between Cape Verde and the United States, noting that these relations date back to the early 20th century.

It was during this period that the first Cape Verdeans traveled to America on North American whaling ships.

“Since then, this community, which is our largest and one of the most dynamic in our vast diaspora, has been a significant driver of the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between our peoples.

The United States is one of Cape Verde’s primary development partners,” the statement read.

The Cape Verdean diaspora in the United States has played a pivotal role in strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
