Russian defence manufacturer Rosoboronexport is set to make a significant appearance at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2024 exhibition, one of the continent’s largest defence expos.
The event, which commenced on 18 September at the Waterkloof Air Base near Pretoria, South Africa, has drawn attention from major players in the global defence industry.
Lieutenant-General Wiseman Mbambo, Commander of the South African Air Force, expressed enthusiasm about Russia’s participation in the event.
“The Russian side has met all the necessary requirements for the exhibition,” said Mbambo, underscoring the importance of Russia’s presence.
His remarks came following a July visit by Russian military specialists to inspect the airbase’s facilities, fueling speculation about the potential arrival of a Russian supersonic Tu-160 bomber.
One of the highlights of the event is expected to be the Russian aerial demonstration scheduled for 21 and 22 September.
While Mbambo confirmed that a Russian military aircraft will take part in the show, he did not specify which model will be featured. The anticipation surrounding this display has garnered attention from both industry professionals and the public alike.
With more than 20 countries and nearly 300 companies in attendance, AAD 2024 is set to be a major event in the defence calendar.
The participation of Rosoboronexport, Russia’s leading arms exporter, highlights the growing interest of Russian defence companies in Africa’s emerging markets.
Russia’s presence at AAD 2024 comes amid increasing partnerships between African nations and global defence manufacturers, reinforcing the strategic importance of the African market in global arms trade.
The exhibition is expected to showcase cutting-edge technology and open doors to new defence agreements across the continent.
