Morocco reports significant surge in patent filings amid innovation drive
Morocco has recorded a remarkable increase in patent applications, reflecting growing interest in innovation and intellectual property protection, according to announcements made during the 38th board meeting of the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC).
The meeting, held on Friday, December 13, 2024, at OMPIC’s headquarters in Casablanca, was chaired by Riad Mazour, Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade.
Highlighting the importance of protecting intellectual property, Mazour stated, “Safeguarding inventions is a cornerstone for fostering innovation and enhancing the competitiveness of Moroccan enterprises.”
He emphasized OMPIC’s critical role in supporting inventors and strengthening the “Made in Morocco” brand as a national economic pillar.
Between January and October 2024, OMPIC received 2,444 patent applications, with 244 originating from Moroccan innovators.
This represents an impressive 42% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
The surge underscores the growing commitment of Moroccan innovators to protecting their creativity, thereby contributing to the country’s economic growth and the advancement of high-value sectors.
In addition to these achievements, Morocco has made notable progress in global intellectual property rankings.
The 2024 Global Innovation Index places the country first worldwide in industrial design filings, 11th in intangible assets, and 30th in trademarks.
Further affirming Morocco’s success, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported that Morocco maintained its top position in Africa and the Arab world for the second consecutive year.
These accomplishments highlight the effectiveness of Morocco’s national policies in fostering innovation and supporting creators.
As patent filings rise, the country strengthens its position as a regional leader in intellectual property and a hub for innovation-driven growth.
