Benin recorded a slight increase in consumer prices in November, with the harmonized consumer price index (CPI) rising to 111.0 from 110.6 in October, reflecting a 0.3% increase, according to the latest monthly price bulletin released by the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSTAD).
The report attributes the rise to significant price hikes in key product groups.
Fish prices surged by 7.4% due to reduced market supply, while cooking oils saw a 5.2% increase.
Solid fuels, including firewood, also experienced a price rise of 1.7%, driven by diminished availability.
Despite these upward trends, the overall increase was somewhat offset by a decline in the prices of certain fresh produce categories.
Notably, fresh vegetables, including fruits and root crops, registered a price drop of 3.6%, providing some relief to consumers.
The data highlights the challenges posed by fluctuating supply chains and seasonal market variations, which continue to influence the cost of living for households in Benin.
