Burundi’s ruling party ramps up grassroots mobilisation ahead of 2025 elections

As Burundi edges closer to its pivotal June 2025 elections, the ruling CNDD-FDD party is intensifying its electoral preparations across the country, with a strong focus on grassroots mobilisation.
In the Rutovu zone of Bururi province, the CNDD-FDD’s Ruhando hill branch convened its members this week in a strategic planning meeting aimed at consolidating electoral tactics and ensuring full readiness for the upcoming vote.
The gathering, held in a notably positive and cooperative atmosphere, brought together senior figures from the party’s Communal Section in Bururi and its Zonal Section in Rutovu.
The session marked a crucial step in reinforcing the party’s organisational structure and reaffirming its dominance at the local level.
“In alignment with Burundi’s domestic political agenda, we are bringing our local leaders together to ensure a unified and strategic approach to the upcoming elections,” said a party representative involved in the planning.
“These meetings help energise our base and prepare them for a strong turnout.”
As Burundi’s dominant political force, the CNDD-FDD is working vigorously to maintain its electoral stronghold.
The party has placed emphasis on deepening engagement with its base at the hill, zone, and communal levels—a structure that has historically bolstered its political effectiveness in rural areas.
The Rutovu meeting serves as a microcosm of a broader national effort by the CNDD-FDD to solidify its presence and secure high voter turnout.
With only a few weeks remaining until Burundians head to the polls, similar gatherings are expected to continue across the country, reinforcing the party’s visibility and cohesion.
Observers note that while the CNDD-FDD has long maintained political dominance in Burundi, its strategy for 2025 hinges on energising its grassroots supporters, who form the backbone of its electoral machinery.
The June 2025 elections are seen as a critical moment for Burundi’s political future, and the CNDD-FDD appears intent on leaving nothing to chance.
