Brice Oligui Nguema sworn in as Gabon’s president after landslide victory and peaceful transition

Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has been sworn in as President of the Republic of Gabon following a resounding electoral victory, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s political history.
The inauguration ceremony took place on May 3 in Angondjé, in northern Libreville, symbolizing the formal return to constitutional order after nearly two years of transitional governance.
President Oligui Nguema, who secured 94.85% of the vote in the April 12 presidential election, officially assumed office under Gabon’s newly adopted Constitution, inaugurating the Fifth Republic.
The swearing-in was conducted by the Constitutional Court of the Transition before members of Gabon’s transitional bicameral parliament—the National Assembly and the Senate.
“I, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, commit myself before God, my ancestors and the Gabonese people to devote all my strength to their well-being, to protect them from all harm, to respect and faithfully defend the constitution and the rule of law, to preserve democratic achievements, the independence of the homeland, the integrity of the national territory, to constitutionally fulfill the duties of my office and to be fair to all; I swear it,” the President declared, left hand resting on the Constitution, right hand raised toward the national flag.
Wearing a black tuxedo and the red presidential sash lined with gold, President Oligui Nguema stood radiant during the ceremony, which also included a traditional rite bestowing spiritual authority upon the new leader.
The event, held in a venue emblematic of Sino-Gabonese cooperation, was attended by around fifteen Heads of State and Government from across Africa and beyond.
Faustin Archange Touadéra, President of the Central African Republic and facilitator for the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) during Gabon’s transition, praised the country’s return to democratic norms.
“Gabon is today becoming an example of a successful political transition,” he stated, commending the peaceful transfer of power that followed the August 30, 2023, coup d’état.
The inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter for Gabon, as President Oligui Nguema steps into office with the backing of a nation and the goodwill of the international community.
