The Secretary of State for African Affairs, Selma Bakhta Mansouri, conveyed a message from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré during a meeting on Thursday.
Mansouri’s visit underscored Algeria’s commitment to deepening ties with Burkina Faso, a nation it regards as a “brotherly country with a shared history and common future.”
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in key areas, including academic exchanges, socio-economic development, and humanitarian initiatives.
Speaking after the meeting, Mansouri emphasized the importance of advancing collaboration, stating, “The cooperation between Algeria and Burkina Faso is progressing well, and both countries must work to enhance it further.”
Commitment to Stability in the Sahel
Amid escalating security concerns in the Sahel region, Mansouri reiterated Algeria’s readiness to support Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism and its efforts to preserve national and regional stability.
“We are fully aware of the broader situation, not only in Burkina Faso but across the Sahel,” she said. “Algeria stands prepared to assist Burkina Faso in maintaining its stability and sovereignty.”
Having previously served as Algeria’s ambassador to Burkina Faso, Mansouri expressed a deep personal connection to the country and its people.
“From the very first day, I felt at home in Burkina Faso,” she remarked.
“The people of Burkina Faso are remarkable—resilient, dignified, and steadfast in their fight to reaffirm their sovereignty. It was a privilege to witness their unwavering spirit.”
The visit comes at a critical time as Burkina Faso navigates complex challenges, including security threats and economic hurdles.
Algeria’s pledge of support highlights its ongoing efforts to strengthen regional partnerships and promote stability in Africa.
