Morocco ranked 88th globally in natural disaster and humanitarian crisis risk

A European report has ranked Morocco 88th worldwide in terms of vulnerability to natural disasters and humanitarian crises, out of 194 countries assessed.

The semi-annual “Risk Index 2024” report, published by INFORM, a body of the European Commission, indicates that Morocco’s overall risk level is relatively low, with a score of 3.5 out of 10.

According to the report, the probability of Morocco facing natural disasters is 4.3 out of 10.

Among the various threats, drought poses the greatest risk with a score of 6.4.

This is followed by the risk of river floods at 5.1, coastal floods at 5.0, tsunamis at 4.5, earthquakes at 4.4, and epidemics at 3.5.

Despite these risks, Morocco’s overall score suggests a moderate vulnerability compared to other nations.

The report highlights the importance of preparedness and resilience in mitigating the impact of these potential disasters.

The INFORM Risk Index is a key tool used by the European Commission to assess and manage risks related to natural disasters and humanitarian crises globally.

This ranking serves as a vital reference for policy-makers and aid organizations in prioritizing resources and planning interventions.

As the global climate continues to change, the need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and response strategies becomes increasingly critical.

Morocco’s ranking underscores the necessity for ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience and enhance readiness to face natural and humanitarian challenges.
