The United States Embassy in Yaoundé has issued a security advisory to its citizens in Cameroon ahead of the country’s highly anticipated presidential elections scheduled for Sunday, October 12, 2025.
In the notice, the U.S. Mission said it currently assesses the risk of violence or significant threats to its personnel as low, but warned that large gatherings and heightened security measures could still pose safety concerns.
“While the U.S. Mission in Cameroon assesses the likelihood of violence or significant negative impact on U.S. government personnel to be low, there is always the potential for large gatherings,” the statement said. It added that Cameroonian law enforcement is expected to deploy additional officers across major cities and may implement roadblocks to maintain public order.
The embassy further cautioned that normal daily activities could be disrupted on election day, with most businesses — including restaurants, grocery stores, and markets — expected to remain closed. It also warned that the Cameroonian government could temporarily close its borders and impose flight restrictions, potentially leading to travel delays or cancellations.
In its advisory, the U.S. Mission urged American citizens to exercise heightened caution and take proactive safety steps. Among the recommendations were:
-
Always carry valid identification documents.
-
Avoid large crowds, rallies, or political gatherings.
-
Comply with law enforcement instructions and remain respectful during interactions.
-
Keep a charged mobile phone with emergency numbers saved.
-
Complete essential shopping and errands before election day, as stores may be crowded or unavailable.
The embassy’s alert reflects a broader atmosphere of political tension ahead of the October polls, which will determine Cameroon’s next president amid ongoing debates about governance, security, and reform.
For U.S. citizens in the country, officials stressed that staying vigilant and prepared remains the best way to ensure personal safety during the election period.
