James Armo, a standout 2023 graduate from the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) School of Allied Health Sciences, has been awarded a highly competitive research fellowship funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
As the only Ghanaian and one of just six individuals globally selected, Armo will undertake advanced research training at the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences, part of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London.
His pioneering research focuses on applying cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to enhance early diagnosis and prognosis of first-episode psychosis, a crucial area in mental health that promises to transform patient care outcomes worldwide.
“This fellowship is a major milestone not only for Mr. Armo but also for UHAS and Ghana at large,” said UHAS Alumni President Gabriel Agbanyo.
“It demonstrates the outstanding calibre of our alumni and the global relevance of the education and training offered at UHAS.”
Armo’s achievement underscores his dedication to advancing clinical neuroscience and mental health research, especially within low-resource settings.
His work is expected to contribute significantly to international efforts aimed at improving mental health diagnostics and treatment, offering hope for better care in regions where such resources remain limited.
The fellowship not only marks a personal triumph but also shines a spotlight on Ghana’s growing prominence in global health research, inspiring future generations of scholars from UHAS and beyond.
