Tunisia hosts ‘Phoenix Express 24’ naval drill with participation of 12 nations
From November 4 to 15, Tunisia will host the multilateral naval exercise “Phoenix Express 24,” conducted in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The exercise will bring together approximately 1,100 military personnel from 12 countries, aiming to strengthen maritime cooperation and enhance regional security in the Mediterranean.
Participating nations include Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Turkey, Italy, Malta, Belgium, Georgia, the United States, and host nation Tunisia.
In a statement, the Tunisian Ministry of Defence confirmed that nine military vessels will gather along Tunisia’s northern coast to support the exercise’s objectives.
“Phoenix Express 24” is set to focus on training military personnel in the effective use of maritime systems and equipment.
A major emphasis will be on addressing illicit activities such as human trafficking and migrant smuggling, aiming to bolster safety and stability in the Mediterranean region.
The programme includes both theoretical courses and hands-on workshops. Participants will train in ship inspection, diving techniques, and maritime investigations, and will undergo specialized sessions on countering biological and chemical weapons.
Additionally, they will receive medical and first-aid training, with a focus on adhering to international maritime laws and regulations.
This year’s exercise underscores the continued importance of international cooperation in addressing the security challenges of the Mediterranean, reflecting a collective commitment to safeguarding the region against illegal activities and promoting stability.
