The Gambia welcomed President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone on Thursday, 14 August 2025, as part of his regional tour following his election as Chair of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
During his one-day working visit to Banjul, President Bio met with his Gambian counterpart, President Adama Barrow, to discuss matters of mutual interest.
The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation while advancing ECOWAS priorities, including peace, security, and regional integration across West Africa.
President Bio arrived in Banjul from Guinea-Bissau earlier than planned. His original schedule anticipated a 2:00 p.m. arrival with an overnight stay; however, updated information from Cabo Verde, where his counterpart requested a 5:00 p.m. meeting, led to a rescheduled arrival at 1:00 p.m.
He departed immediately after his discussion with President Barrow to continue on to Praia, Cabo Verde, for the scheduled engagement.
The discussions between the two leaders emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing regional challenges and promoting ECOWAS’ vision of integration.
President Bio is expected to continue his consultations in Senegal following his visit to Cabo Verde, signalling a concerted effort to foster dialogue and cooperation among West African states in the early months of his tenure as ECOWAS Chair.
Observers note that this diplomatic tour reflects the new Chair’s commitment to maintaining close coordination with member states and reinforcing the bloc’s role in ensuring peace, security, and economic cohesion in the region.
By meeting directly with heads of state, President Bio aims to consolidate support for joint initiatives and ensure that ECOWAS remains a strong, united voice on regional and international matters.
The visit highlights the ongoing efforts of West African leaders to strengthen ties, coordinate policy, and address challenges that transcend national borders, from security threats to economic integration and sustainable development.
