Tanzania opened the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in emphatic fashion with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso, delighting a packed home crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The Taifa Stars, co-hosting the tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda, made a powerful statement on the opening night of the 8th edition of CHAN.
After a tightly contested first half, Abdul Hamisi Suleiman broke the deadlock with a composed penalty in added time (45+3), sending the fans into celebration.
The momentum continued in the second half when Mohamed Hussein secured the win with a well-placed header in the 71st minute.
Tanzania’s disciplined performance earned them three crucial points, putting them at the top of Group B. Burkina Faso, who struggled to find rhythm throughout the match, now face a difficult path and must respond quickly to stay in the competition.
The CHAN 2025 action continues on Sunday with two major clashes. Defending champions Morocco begin their campaign against Angola in Group A.
The fixture is set for 3 p.m. GMT at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium. With back-to-back CHAN titles under their belt, Morocco’s locally-based Atlas Lions aim to reassert their dominance and make a strong start.
Later in the evening, Group B sees another high-stakes contest as Mauritania face Madagascar at 5 p.m. GMT in Dar es Salaam. With both teams evenly matched on paper, the encounter is expected to be one of the most competitive of the opening round.
