The South Korean company DONEWON, a specialist in tuna processing and canning, has revealed ambitious plans to transform Senegal into a key regional hub for fishery exports targeting North America and Europe.
A delegation led by Vice President Myoung Lee met with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye at the Presidential Palace on Monday.
“We had very constructive discussions with President Diomaye Faye, and we welcome the government’s commitment to supporting our project,” Lee told RTS, Senegal’s public television broadcaster.
Already active in Senegal, DONEWON currently exports locally processed tuna products to the United States.
The company now intends to deepen its investments to position Senegal as a major industrial centre for fish processing and export, aligning closely with the Vision Senegal 2050 development plan and the nation’s strategy for food sovereignty.
“Our ambition is clear: to process locally, to promote Senegalese fishing resources and to promote Made in Senegal products in major global markets,” added Lee.
The project complements Senegal’s ongoing efforts to attract high value-added investors in the fisheries sector, viewed by authorities as a vital engine for inclusive economic growth, job creation, and revitalization of coastal communities.
Government sources confirmed that a technical consultation framework will soon be established to facilitate the project’s deployment, ensuring that it integrates seamlessly into local value chains while adhering to strict environmental and social standards.
DONEWON’s strategy promises to enhance Senegal’s position on the global seafood market, boosting economic opportunities for coastal populations and showcasing the country’s rich marine resources on an international stage.
