Separatist attack in northwest Cameroon claims three lives

An attack by separatists on Sunday in the Mbaw Plain of Donga Mantung division, Northwest Cameroon, left three people dead and one seriously injured, according to military sources.

Local media reports indicate that a soldier and an unidentified civilian were killed instantly.

Two other civilians sustained severe injuries; one succumbed to wounds during an emergency medical evacuation, raising the death toll to three.

The incident reportedly unfolded when an off-duty gendarme boarded a passenger vehicle traveling along the Ndu-Magba road.

Armed separatists, positioned a short distance away, targeted the vehicle, leading to the deadly confrontation.

This attack is part of the ongoing conflict that has plagued Cameroon’s Anglophone regions since 2017.

The crisis pits government forces against separatist groups seeking independence for the Northwest and Southwest regions.

Originating from socio-political grievances that surfaced in late 2016, the conflict has since led to significant loss of life and widespread displacement.
