The Dakar-Gorée Maritime Line (LMDG) is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of two cutting-edge hybrid vessels and the modernization of its main quay.
The announcement was made by the National Agency for Maritime Affairs (ANAM), which is overseeing the project valued at 25.5 billion FCFA.
The initiative will see the construction of two passenger boats, each with a 350-seat capacity and powered by a hybrid propulsion system combining electric and diesel engines. Alongside this, a 110-metre quay will be redeveloped to enhance both passenger safety and reception standards.
The majority of funding for this ambitious project comes from a loan issued by South Korea’s Eximbank, part of a bilateral cooperation agreement focused on sustainable mobility. Technical preparations are already underway, with the vessels and infrastructure expected to be delivered by December 30, 2027.
Each of the new ferries promises improved comfort and functionality. They will feature VIP lounges, modern sanitary facilities, leather seating, and cargo loading capabilities.
Tourism boost anticipated for Gorée Island
As part of the broader strategy, the improved transportation system is projected to significantly increase tourism to Gorée Island—an iconic site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage location. The island currently draws about 500,000 visitors annually. With enhanced ferry access, authorities estimate a 25% increase in footfall, equating to 125,000 additional tourists per year.
With the average tourist spending estimated at 94,200 FCFA, the rise in visitors could inject nearly 11.8 billion FCFA into the local tourism economy. This financial uplift is expected to benefit public institutions and invigorate small-scale local businesses such as restaurants, craft shops, guesthouses, luggage handlers, and tour guides.
A sustainable path to local development
This investment is more than an infrastructure upgrade—it represents a strategic step toward preserving and enhancing the cultural and economic role of Gorée. By introducing environmentally friendly vessels and ensuring more reliable service, the project addresses both the ecological needs of the coastal region and the socio-economic needs of island residents.
The LMDG will now shoulder the responsibility of ensuring smooth and effective operations in partnership with local authorities and private stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to turn this initiative into a sustainable growth engine for one of Senegal’s most symbolic destinations, without compromising its historical integrity.
