Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has alleged that over 1,000 billion CFA francs were discovered in the bank account of a top official from the previous administration of ex-President Macky Sall.
Sonko, speaking at a campaign rally in Thiès, denounced the colossal sum as a misuse of national wealth, declaring, “Do you think this is normal? This money must return to the people.”
As Senegal heads into the legislative elections, Sonko’s statements have sparked shock and debate across the nation.
He emphasized the current administration’s dedication to financial transparency, underlining President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s commitment to accountability.
This initiative aims to investigate and bring to justice those allegedly involved in mismanagement under Sall’s rule.
Responding to criticisms from members of Sall’s former administration, Sonko suggested that fear of justice was fueling their defensiveness.
“If they’re speaking out so loudly now, it’s out of fear.
They’re mistaken if they believe a parliamentary seat will protect them,” he remarked, making it clear that if the Pastef party wins a parliamentary majority, it could swiftly vote to remove the immunity of implicated deputies, opening them up to prosecution.
Sonko’s revelations align with the new government’s pledge to establish a cleaner administration and break with past practices.
In his address, he reiterated his vision for rigorous governance and a commitment to restoring public trust through an unwavering stance on integrity in managing Senegal’s resources.
