Thousands of Guineans gathered at the Grand Théâtre National de Dakar on Sunday in a historic show of support for Guinea’s proposed new Constitution, which is set to be voted on in a referendum on September 21, 2025.
The event, organised under the banner of the Naaguè Wéti movement and led by economic operator Elhadj Diarouga Diallo, turned into a mass mobilisation with a celebratory atmosphere.
The Grand Théâtre itself struggled to accommodate the immense crowd, highlighting the enthusiasm of Guineans living in Senegal who travelled from across the country to participate.
The rally opened with songs praising General Mamadi Doumbouya, drawing citizens of all ages, professions, and faiths.
Several speeches punctuated the programme, accompanied by artistic performances from figures such as Ambassador Mandjou Dioubaté and Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, Mahamadou Abdoulaye Diallo, who is a frequent participant in Dakar civic life.
Bangaly Steve Touré, representing event sponsor Ousmane Doumbouya, thanked attendees for their commitment and urged them to vote decisively in favour of the Constitution on September 21. He described the turnout as a sign of unity and determination among the Guinean diaspora.
Among those present was Macoumba Touré Sarr, a close friend of General Doumbouya, who despite a disability, expressed his pride in attending the landmark event. Several artists, including Kandia Kora and King Savané, performed on stage, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Minister Diallo addressed the crowd, linking the event to Guinea’s broader national trajectory. “Guinea, our homeland that we cherish so much, is preparing to write a new page on September 21, 2025, a new chapter in its history.
A Constitution that reflects us, that unites us because it is of the People, by the People and for the People,” he declared, earning sustained applause.
He emphasised the country’s resilience through past political crises and underlined that the new Constitution aims to solidify democracy, national cohesion, and sustainable prosperity.
The Minister also announced that General Doumbouya will soon visit Dakar to engage further with the Guinean community, this time at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, promising another major gathering ahead of the referendum.
