In Washington, Senegal’s Minister of Finance and Budget, Cheikh Diba, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, reaffirmed their shared determination to deepen financial cooperation between Dakar and the Bretton Woods institution.
Meeting on Tuesday in the US capital, both sides reviewed progress on finalizing a new program that aims to strengthen Senegal’s macroeconomic stability and fiscal reforms.
According to an official statement released on Wednesday, the discussions highlighted a “convergence of views” on the next stages of the process. These include an upcoming session of the IMF Executive Board in the coming weeks, which is expected to address the issue of misreporting and consider the approval of a future cooperation framework.
“The two parties reaffirmed their commitment to moving forward together. Once the technical discussions are finalized, Senegal and IMF staff will move forward together toward submitting the dossier to the Executive Board,” the statement noted.
An IMF mission is scheduled to visit Dakar next week to finalize the work initiated in Washington, signaling both parties’ intent to expedite the process.
The Senegalese delegation expressed appreciation for Ms. Georgieva’s “stance and messages” conveyed in her recent press release following the IMF Board of Directors’ informal meeting on October 3, 2025.
At the conclusion of their talks, Mr. Diba and Ms. Georgieva reaffirmed their shared ambition to “open a new page” in the partnership between Senegal and the IMF — a move seen as a key milestone in reinforcing mutual trust and advancing financial collaboration between the two sides.
