Samuel Eto’o faces scrutiny over management of ‘Indomitable Lions’ friendly match funds

Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and legendary former striker, is under growing scrutiny following revelations that funds from two international friendlies played by the Indomitable Lions were transferred directly into his personal bank account, bypassing the federation’s official channels.
At the heart of the controversy are two matches held in 2023—against Mexico and Russia—during which Eto’o allegedly received $500,000 and €455,056 respectively.
According to multiple sources, the funds, intended for match organization, were deposited into Eto’o’s personal account at the Qatar National Bank in Doha rather than FECAFOOT’s official accounts.
A source close to Eto’o defended the move, citing “practical reasons” and denying any fraudulent intent.
However, the explanation has done little to quell concerns, particularly in light of the Cameroonian government’s reported contribution of 559 million CFA francs to support the match against Russia.
Critics argue that such direct personal handling of institutional funds is both ethically questionable and damaging to the credibility of Cameroonian football governance.
Legal experts note that while proving embezzlement may be complex, the transactions could violate FECAFOOT’s and FIFA’s codes of ethics. Article 13 of FECAFOOT’s Code explicitly prohibits the use of a position for personal financial gain.
Furthermore, Article 20 of the FIFA Code warns against conflicts of interest, stipulating that officials must avoid any situation where personal interests interfere with professional duties.
The plot thickens with revelations that the emergency committee of FECAFOOT allegedly authorized the payment transfers during a meeting on September 29, 2023.
Should this be confirmed, the scandal could widen to implicate additional senior officials in potential breaches of fiduciary duty.
Although no formal charges have been brought against Eto’o or FECAFOOT officials at this stage, calls for transparency and accountability are mounting.
The episode threatens not just the reputation of one of Africa’s football icons, but also the institutional integrity of the sport’s governing body in Cameroon.
With global football bodies closely observing developments, the outcome of this unfolding case may set a precedent for governance and ethics in African football.
For Samuel Eto’o, the stakes may be higher than ever—this time, the match is being played not on grass, but in the court of public opinion and ethical responsibility.
