President Ghazouani arrives in nouadhibou for two-day development tour

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani arrived in the city of Nouadhibou on Sunday evening, beginning a two-day official visit during which he is expected to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for a number of development projects across key sectors.
Upon his arrival at Nouadhibou Airport, President Ghazouani was welcomed by local administrative and military authorities. Residents of the coastal city also turned out in large numbers, organizing a popular reception that featured welcoming banners and public expressions of support for the president’s visit.
The president’s itinerary includes the inauguration of facilities in critical areas such as potable water, digital infrastructure, education, and vocational training. The agenda also highlights projects aimed at expanding the maritime industrial sector and strengthening port infrastructure.
This visit comes amid growing hopes among Nouadhibou’s population — the economic capital of Mauritania — that it will mark a turning point for long-delayed development. Despite its strategic importance, Nouadhibou continues to face serious infrastructure deficiencies, particularly in electricity and water services.
As home to the country’s largest fishing industry and the export operations of SNIM (National Industrial and Mining Company), Nouadhibou plays a pivotal role in the national economy. Yet, this economic weight has not fully translated into improved living standards for its residents.
Local expectations are high that President Ghazouani’s presence in the city will bring renewed momentum and concrete steps toward transforming Nouadhibou’s potential into tangible progress — a long-awaited promise that residents hope will finally be fulfilled.
