“Let us together make Cameroon a land of great opportunities for economic and social development, in peace and unity,” declared the 92-year-old head of state in a message to the nation on Tuesday, June 24.
The long-serving leader, who has held office since 1982, addressed his compatriots in the midst of a complex landscape marked by security challenges in the North-West and South-West regions, the impact of global economic pressures, and persistently high youth unemployment.
Yet, his message emphasized hope, dialogue, and collective responsibility.
President Biya framed national unity and institutional trust as essential levers for overcoming adversity.
“The political struggle must remain a battle of ideas,” he reminded political actors, signalling his desire for civility in Cameroon’s public discourse ahead of the upcoming electoral season.
As part of his vision for renewed development, Biya highlighted infrastructure expansion, second-generation agriculture, digital innovation, and private sector investment as critical pillars of economic recovery and inclusive growth.
These, he suggested, are the keys to unlocking opportunity and improving living standards across the nation.
He also reiterated the non-negotiable role of peace: “The preservation of peace is essential to any form of sustainable development,” Biya said, underscoring the link between stability and national progress.
While his address did not unveil new policies, the president’s tone and timing indicate a call to solidarity in anticipation of transformative challenges — and opportunities — for Cameroon’s future.
