Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured their place in African football history, claiming a record $1 million prize after winning the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat.
The dramatic final, played on July 26, 2025, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, saw Nigeria edge hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling encounter. The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when 24-year-old midfielder Jennifer Echegini calmly slotted home from Esther Okoronkwo’s perfectly delivered free-kick, sealing a stunning second-half comeback.
This victory marks the Falcons’ 10th WAFCON title, further cementing their legacy as the continent’s most decorated women’s national team. The $1 million reward represents a 100% increase from the prize money offered at the previous tournament, reflecting the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) commitment to expanding support for women’s football.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasized the significance of the increase, stating that the expanded funding would “help improve the remuneration of women players, coaches, and football staff,” underscoring the organization’s push to drive greater equality and growth within the women’s game.
The Falcons’ latest triumph not only extends their dominance in African football but also highlights the growing recognition and investment in women’s sport across the continent.
