President Abdourahmane Tiani has declared that Niger remains steadfast on its path toward “full and complete sovereignty,” two years after the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP) seized power on July 26, 2023.
Speaking on Friday, July 25, 2025, General Tiani acknowledged the turbulence of the country’s ongoing transition but reaffirmed the military government’s determination to break free from what he described as a “reactionary neocolonial system.”
“It is certainly a path full of pitfalls, with difficult consequences, both for Nigeriens, taken individually, and for our country, as an organized political community,” he said. “Since July 26, 2023, and our patriotic commitment to take our destiny into our own hands, the reactionary neocolonial system of guardianship of Niger that we overthrew has continued to unleash itself against our country and its people.”
General Tiani accused foreign-backed coalitions of waging hybrid warfare against Niger, combining “spectacular terrorist operations, subversive economic action, internal political manipulation, and information warfare” to undermine the government and its institutions.
“The results they achieve are often spectacularly important,” he continued, “not because they give a strategic advantage to the forces opposed to our country or because they constitute a genuine political project alternative to ours, but simply because, by the immediacy of their effects and their violence, they negatively impact our daily lives… sow doubt among some of us and divide us, meet our legitimate but pressing individual expectations… and prevent us from projecting ourselves into the future which nevertheless promises to be bright for Niger and the AES Confederation as a whole.”
While recognising public frustrations, Tiani said he remains conscious of the sacrifices made by citizens and the military. “I appreciate the complexity of the situation we are facing… as well as your legitimate expectations for a life that must necessarily be better for Nigeriens.”
He concluded by paying tribute to Niger’s Defense and Security Forces “for their professionalism and sacrifices,” to the people “for their resilience and commitment,” and to “all friendly countries of Niger for their valuable support.”
