Niger hosts international conference on sovereignty and anti-imperialism

Niamey, the capital of Niger, is hosting the International Conference on Solidarity with the Peoples of the Sahel, focusing on national sovereignty and the fight against imperialism.

The event, which began on Tuesday, brings together representatives from Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali—countries united under the Sahel States Alliance (AES).

The three-day conference is presided over by Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine and aims to highlight the collective resilience of the Sahel region’s nations.

Organized by the Nigerien government in partnership with the Pan Africanism Today (PAT) movement and the West African Peoples’ Organization (WAPO), the gathering underscores a shared commitment to peace, socio-economic progress, and solidarity.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Zeine commended the people of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger for their determination to break free from neocolonial influence.

He emphasized their collective aspiration for mutual respect and equitable cooperation.

“These three nations are prepared to work with any country that respects their sovereignty and is committed to mutually beneficial cooperation,” he stated.

Zeine reiterated that the Sahel nations are not seeking conflict but demand autonomy and the right to live in peace.

“Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso do not wish to wage war against anyone.

All we ask is to be left in peace,” he concluded.

The conference serves as a platform for promoting unity and addressing the challenges faced by the Sahel region, particularly regarding self-determination and fostering socio-economic growth in the face of external pressures.

Participants aim to develop strategies that reinforce sovereignty and build a future grounded in regional collaboration and independence.
