Niger forms special committee to restructure national electricity company nigelec

Niger’s Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, has officially inaugurated a special ad hoc committee tasked with developing new governance rules for the recently nationalized Nigerien Electricity Company (NIGELEC).
The committee, launched during a high-level meeting held in Niamey on Monday, is responsible for reviewing NIGELEC’s financial situation, assessing social and operational costs, and proposing structural reforms aimed at ensuring the company’s long-term financial and technical sustainability.
According to the Prime Minister’s office, the committee’s mandate includes recommending amendments to the company’s statutes, drafting a new personnel framework, and identifying measures that can enhance service delivery and institutional efficiency.
The newly formed committee is structured as follows:

Chairperson: Energy Advisor to the President of the Republic

Vice-Chairperson: Special Advisor to the Prime Minister and Head of the Petroleum, Mines, and Energy Department

First Rapporteur: Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy

Second Rapporteur: Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy and Finance

The committee will convene at the discretion of its chair and is required to submit progress updates following each session. Members are also authorized to consult with any external expert deemed essential to fulfilling their mission.
The committee has been given a deadline of one month from the date of installation to submit its final report. All operational costs will be covered by the national budget.
This move is part of a broader reform effort aimed at revitalizing the national utility sector and ensuring access to reliable electricity for citizens across Niger.
