Navinchandra Ramgoolam named prime minister of Mauritius after landslide election victory

Navinchandra Ramgoolam, leader of the Alliance for Change, has been appointed Prime Minister of Mauritius following a sweeping victory in the legislative elections.
The announcement was made by President Prithvirajsing Roopun on Tuesday.
The appointment came shortly after the resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, who, along with his entire government, stepped down with immediate effect.
Final election results announced overnight confirmed that the Alliance for Change secured a commanding 60 out of 62 seats in parliament.
Meanwhile, Jugnauth’s Alliance Lepep failed to win any direct seats.
However, under the “Best Loser” System—a unique feature of Mauritius’ parliamentary representation designed to ensure ethnic balance—two Alliance Lepep candidates were granted seats.
At 77 years old, Ramgoolam now takes on the role of Prime Minister for the third time. His previous terms were from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2014.
This comeback marks a major political resurgence for Ramgoolam, who faced back-to-back defeats in 2014 and 2019.
His leadership of the Alliance for Change led to a decisive victory over the Alliance Lepep, signaling a new chapter in Mauritius’ political landscape.
