Morocco unveils Armoured vehicle factory in strategic partnership with India’s Tata

Morocco has taken a decisive step toward military self-reliance with the launch of its first-ever armoured vehicle manufacturing facility, established in collaboration with India’s Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).
The new factory, located in the Berrechid region, marks a significant milestone in the country’s defence industrialisation strategy.
“Mastering armored mobility is a major strategic asset for any military power wishing to secure its borders, respond to asymmetric threats or participate in peacekeeping operations.
Armored vehicles, both projection platforms and means of protection, have become essential to support the evolution of combat doctrines.”
As part of this strategic vision, the newly created plant will produce the WhAP 8×8, a state-of-the-art military transport vehicle equipped for rugged terrain and amphibious operations.
The initial production phase targets an annual output of 100 vehicles, with a strong emphasis on local integration and skills development.
“In this dynamic, Morocco opts for a policy of defensive industrialization which reaches a new milestone with the creation of its first armored manufacturing unit, in partnership with the Indian group Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).”
Beyond reinforcing the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), the project aims to position Morocco as a regional defence supplier.
Of the 400 vehicles projected, 150 will serve Morocco’s military, while the remainder may be exported to African allies, giving the programme a distinct diplomatic dimension.
“The program goes beyond national modernization alone.
Of the more than 400 vehicles planned, 150 are intended for the FAR, while the others could equip partner armies on the continent.”
Operating under the name TATA Advanced Systems Maroc (TASM), the facility is expected to generate around 90 direct and 250 indirect jobs, contributing significantly to Berrechid’s economic development.
A public environmental inquiry will accompany the launch in line with regulatory standards.
“The structure, which will be created under the name TATA Advanced Systems Maroc (TASM), is part of an approach combining technology transfer, local skills development and economic benefits.”
If fully realised, this partnership could open the door to further joint ventures in defence and advanced technology, firmly placing Morocco at the forefront of Africa’s emerging military-industrial complex.
