Egypt: administrative prosecution launches digital training platform
The Moroccan U20 football team faced their first loss in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup on Saturday night, going down 1-0 to Mexico at the Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander in Valparaíso, Chile. Despite the defeat, the result has no bearing on Morocco’s stellar campaign, as they had already secured their spot in the knockout stages before the match even began.
Having delivered dominant victories against Spain and Brazil in their opening two games, the Moroccan Lions of the Atlas entered this match with little pressure. National coach Mohamed Ouahbi took the opportunity to rotate his squad, giving several players a chance to prove themselves ahead of the upcoming knockout rounds.
With around seven key players starting on the bench, including standout performers such as Yassine Gessime, Yassir Zabiri, Othmane Maamma, and Ismaël Baouf, Morocco fielded a much-changed team. The tactical decision to rest key players paid off in terms of physical preparation, although it resulted in a negative outcome on the scoreboard.
The match was evenly contested in the first half, with neither team able to break the deadlock. However, Mexico came out stronger after the break and took the lead in the 51st minute when Gilberto Mora converted a penalty, giving his side a crucial advantage and reigniting their hopes of qualification.
Having drawn their first two matches, El Tri came into the game with a sense of urgency, knowing only a victory would guarantee them a spot in the knockout phase. Their determination and resilience paid off as they held off Moroccan attacks, with the defense remaining solid and goalkeeper Rafael Gutiérrez producing key saves.
Although Morocco couldn’t find an equaliser, their loss didn’t affect their standing in Group C. With six points, they finished top of the group, ahead of Mexico, who secured five points. Both teams have now sealed their passage to the Round of 16 in the U-20 World Cup.
