Former US President Donald Trump has reiterated Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, reaffirming that the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat remains the only credible path toward a lasting resolution.
In a message addressed to King Mohammed VI on the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne, Trump stated, “The United States of America recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara,” and reaffirmed that the autonomy plan is “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for resolving the conflict.
The letter underscores a continuation of US policy established during Trump’s previous administration in December 2020, when Washington formally recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory.
That stance has since been supported by close allies and former officials, including Richard Duke Buchan and Massad Boulos, who have reiterated the position in recent public statements.
The message not only reaffirmed US diplomatic support for Morocco’s territorial claims but also emphasized the deep-rooted partnership between the two nations.
Trump praised the “strategic relationship” shared by the United States and Morocco, founded on mutual interests such as counterterrorism, economic cooperation, and the pursuit of peace.
He also highlighted the Abraham Accords as a key opportunity for regional stability, referencing Morocco’s involvement in the historic normalization agreements that reshaped diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
Concluding his message, Trump expressed a strong desire to see the bilateral relationship strengthened further, especially in efforts to advance peace and security across North Africa and the Sahel.
Trump’s renewed endorsement comes amid ongoing international debates over the future of Western Sahara, a territory where Morocco continues to receive consistent backing from Washington in multilateral forums.
