ACWA Power, a global leader in renewable energy and water desalination, has secured two landmark solar energy projects—NOOR Midelt 2 and NOOR Midelt 3—marking a significant milestone in Morocco’s transition towards sustainable power.
The victories came after a competitive international tender led by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN).
Both NOOR Midelt 2 and NOOR Midelt 3 are large-scale photovoltaic plants, each boasting a capacity of 400 megawatts-peak (MWp).
Beyond generating clean electricity, the projects will feature advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS) capable of supplying 230 megawatts of power during peak demand periods for up to two hours.
Developed under a build-operate-own (BOO) model, these plants will operate with the backing of a 30-year power purchase agreement with MASEN, ensuring a stable off-take for the electricity produced.
The dual projects embody Morocco’s ambitious strategy to ramp up renewable energy capacity and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. By enhancing the flexibility of the national electricity grid, NOOR Midelt 2 and 3 are set to play a crucial role in integrating renewables into Morocco’s energy mix by the year 2030.
The environmental impact is equally notable. The combined output and storage capacity will help prevent the release of approximately 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, underscoring Morocco’s commitment to its climate goals.
This development cements Morocco’s position as a regional leader in clean energy innovation and exemplifies how strategic partnerships and cutting-edge technology can drive the global transition to sustainable power.
