A Moroccan scientist has drawn global attention with a groundbreaking innovation in medical diagnostics, highlighting the growing prominence of Maghreb researchers on the international stage.
Professor Hassan Ammor, director of the Technological Innovation Center at the Mohammedia School of Engineering, Mohammed V University in Rabat, received the silver medal at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival held from August 8 to 10 in Santa Clara, California.
The award recognises Professor Ammor’s project, “A New Smart Microwave Imaging Scanner for Breast Cancer Detection,” a lightweight, compact, and non-invasive device designed to facilitate early detection of breast cancer.
The technology promises faster, more accessible diagnostic procedures, potentially transforming patient care and public health outcomes.
“This recognition is a testament to the potential of Moroccan and Maghreb researchers to deliver solutions to pressing global challenges,” said Professor Ammor.
“Our aim is to make early breast cancer detection simpler, safer, and more affordable for patients worldwide.”
Professor Ammor’s achievement is being celebrated not only as a national milestone for Morocco, but also as a first for Africa and the Arab world at such a high-profile scientific event. It underscores the region’s increasing contribution to global scientific research and innovation.
Across the Maghreb, from Algeria to Tunisia, Libya, and Mauritania, researchers are gaining international acclaim for pioneering work in fields ranging from biotechnology to renewable energy.
These successes are fostering collaborations with global institutions, attracting funding, and inspiring a new generation of scientists in the region.
Experts note that innovations like Professor Ammor’s scanner demonstrate how local scientific expertise can address global health challenges while boosting regional technological development.
By combining research excellence with practical applications, Maghreb scientists are carving out a place for the region on the world stage of innovation.
The Silicon Valley accolade marks a significant step in promoting scientific excellence in Morocco and highlights the potential for African researchers to compete at the highest levels internationally.
