Morocco has taken a significant step toward establishing a national framework for artificial intelligence, as participants at the country’s first National Conference on Artificial Intelligence called for a comprehensive roadmap that outlines strategic priorities and ethical safeguards.
Held on July 1 and 2 in Salé, the conference gathered experts, policymakers, and private sector leaders who emphasized the urgency of developing legislation to govern the responsible use of AI.
Among the key proposals was the creation of legal texts that align with international standards while ensuring transparency, privacy protection, and institutional accountability.
“The development and use of artificial intelligence must respect ethical principles that guarantee the protection of personal data and public trust,” read the final recommendations released on Wednesday.
In addition to legal reforms, the conference stressed the importance of technological investment. Attendees advocated for the creation of secure national data platforms, high-capacity data centers, and robust cybersecurity systems.
These measures are seen as foundational pillars for building an AI ecosystem capable of supporting innovation and ensuring national digital sovereignty.
The recommendations also highlighted the transformative potential of AI across key social sectors, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, and energy.
Integration of AI into public services and cultural preservation efforts was strongly encouraged as a way to improve efficiency and modernize governance.
Economic priorities featured prominently, with delegates urging targeted support for startups and small-to-medium-sized enterprises.
Specialized incubators and public-private collaboration were identified as essential tools to accelerate the adoption of AI-based solutions and spur job creation.
On the international front, Morocco was urged to deepen its cooperation with other countries—particularly within Africa—by establishing specialized AI research centers and hosting regular global events.
Strengthening South-South partnerships is expected to play a vital role in building a cohesive AI strategy across the continent.
With this landmark conference, Morocco positions itself at the forefront of AI development in the region, aiming to strike a balance between innovation, regulation, and ethical responsibility.
