Morocco champions African solidarity at IAEA conference
Morocco has reaffirmed its commitment to South-South cooperation and African solidarity during a ministerial conference on nuclear science, technology, and applications held in Vienna, Austria.
Speaking at the event, Azzeddine Farhane, Morocco’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, highlighted the nation’s dedication to supporting multilateral efforts and advancing initiatives under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) motto, “Atoms for Peace and Development.”
Farhane emphasized Morocco’s leadership in promoting scientific collaboration across Africa, particularly in the peaceful application of nuclear technologies to address developmental challenges.
With support from the IAEA, Morocco has built a robust expertise in critical areas such as health, energy, agriculture, and environmental management, while prioritizing nuclear safety and security.
Each year, the country facilitates capacity-building programs for experts from over 40 African nations, providing training, certifications, and technical assistance through institutions like the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science, and Technology (CNESTEN) and the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR).
Morocco has also been at the forefront of innovative initiatives like Zodiac, aimed at combating zoonotic diseases, and Rays of Hope, which seeks to improve access to cancer treatment across Africa.
In October, the nation hosted a regional meeting to strengthen collaboration among African laboratories, underscoring its commitment to fostering scientific cooperation on the continent.
In addition, Morocco is leveraging nuclear technology to address water scarcity.
A resolution introduced by the country at the 68th IAEA General Conference calls for greater international cooperation in deploying small- and medium-scale nuclear reactors for water desalination.
This initiative reflects Morocco’s proactive approach to sustainable development solutions.
Farhane reiterated Morocco’s belief in the transformative potential of nuclear technology, not just as a tool for progress but also as a cornerstone of solidarity across Africa.
By prioritizing knowledge-sharing and regional partnerships, Morocco continues to position itself as a leader in Africa’s scientific and technological advancement.
