This visit included a meeting with the Chairman of Gotion High-Tech, Li Zhen, as part of Akhannouch’s broader trip to Beijing, where he represented King Mohammed VI at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit.
Akhannouch, accompanied by Mohcine Jazouli, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of Investment, Convergence, and Evaluation of Public Policies, Chakib Alj, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, and Ali Seddiki, Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development, also toured the “United Cell Line” plant, a flagship facility of Gotion High-Tech and Volkswagen Group in China.
During the visit, the Chairman of Gotion High-Tech reaffirmed that the Kenitra project is on schedule, with construction expected to be completed within eight months.
The Kenitra industrial unit, an integrated project for the production of electric batteries, represents an initial investment of 14 billion dirhams and is expected to create 17,000 jobs.
The facility is anticipated to begin operations in the second quarter of 2026.
Prime Minister Akhannouch emphasized the government’s commitment to actively supporting this strategic initiative, which will position Morocco as home to the first major industrial battery production unit in the Middle East and Africa.
The Kenitra project is part of a broader effort to develop Morocco’s electric battery ecosystem, integrating with other strategic initiatives like the JV CNGR project and the Al Mada partnership at Jorf Lasfar.
The Moroccan delegation also visited the “Inovative Cell Line” facility, a state-of-the-art, fully automated plant resulting from a technological collaboration between Volkswagen and Gotion High-Tech.
Spanning 45,000 square meters, the factory boasts an annual production capacity of 180,000 battery systems, specifically designed for Volkswagen’s electric vehicles manufactured in China.
The visit provided the Moroccan delegation with a firsthand look at an operational battery production plant similar to the one planned for Kenitra, reinforcing confidence in Gotion High-Tech’s capability to deliver a project of this magnitude in Morocco.
