Minister of labor explains delay in addressing delivery workers’ conditions Amid rising numbers

Mohamed Gabrane, Egypt’s Minister of Labor, has clarified recent delays in monitoring and improving the conditions of delivery workers—commonly known as “delivery riders”—amid a surge in their numbers and their growing presence in the informal economy.
Speaking on Monday, Gabrane acknowledged that the ministry has been closely following the challenges faced by this workforce. However, he noted that the rapid expansion of delivery workers recently transformed them into a significant segment within the informal sector, necessitating urgent and comprehensive government intervention.
“The ministry has been carefully monitoring the situation of delivery workers, but with the recent increase in their numbers and their integration into the informal economy, immediate action was required under directives from the political leadership to ensure professional justice and comprehensive protection,” Gabrane said.
The minister highlighted the launch of the “Your Safety Matters” campaign, describing it as part of a long-term strategy to support delivery workers.
He emphasized that the campaign is just the beginning of broader initiatives planned to provide training, qualification, and formal employment opportunities, all aimed at securing the professional and social stability of this growing workforce.
Gabrane added, “This campaign will be built upon in the future with further initiatives to train and employ delivery workers, ensuring their career stability and social protection.”
As the gig economy expands rapidly across Egypt and beyond, the government’s renewed focus on delivery workers underscores the need for formal regulation, improved labor rights, and social safeguards for a sector that has become essential to modern urban life.
