Mauritania’s president Ghazouani attends COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan
Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani has arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, to participate in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The high-profile conference, which gathers global leaders, diplomats, and climate experts, runs until November 22.
Accompanying President Ghazouani is a distinguished delegation, including Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad; Mohamed Ould Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum; Masouda Bint Baham Ould Mohamed Lagdhaf, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development; and Nani Ould Achrouqa, Minister Delegate to the Presidency.
Also in attendance are presidential advisors and Mauritania’s First Lady, Maryam Mohamed Fadel Al-Dah.
The COP29 summit in Baku offers an international platform for addressing the escalating threats posed by climate change.
The event has attracted diplomats and climate leaders from across the globe, emphasizing the urgency of global collaboration in mitigating climate risks.
Historically significant as the world’s leading oil producer in the late 19th century, Baku was the site of the first oil well in 1846.
Today, the Azerbaijani capital serves as a symbol of energy transformation as nations seek pathways to reduce emissions and transition to cleaner energy sources.
In the lead-up to COP29, the United Nations stressed the need for intensified climate adaptation efforts and a renewed commitment to scaling up financial resources for climate resilience initiatives.
This year’s conference is expected to establish a new financial target for developing countries to both curb greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The proposed framework aims to replace the $100 billion annual goal set in 2009—a target finally reached in 2022 after years of challenges.
