The Mauritanian government has issued a firm ultimatum to honorary consular missions operating within its borders, demanding full compliance with national vehicle registration and customs regulations within ten days or risk facing punitive measures.
In a joint communiqué released on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Equipment and Transport instructed all honorary consular representations to strictly adhere to the country’s regulatory framework.
The authorities warned that any ongoing violations beyond the given deadline would be treated as serious infractions, potentially resulting in sanctions and administrative penalties.
The government is specifically calling for adherence to the customs procedures that apply to vehicles used by diplomatic missions, as well as the mandatory use of official diplomatic license plates bearing the “CC” series, in line with Mauritanian law.
“Compliance with the texts in force is a guarantee of good diplomatic and consular functioning, and reflects the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect between Mauritania and its partners,” the government said in its statement.
The ultimatum underscores Nouakchott’s increasing insistence on regulatory discipline among foreign diplomatic and consular missions. Officials are stressing that such enforcement measures are essential to maintaining the integrity of diplomatic relations and ensuring that all foreign representatives operate within the same legal parameters as Mauritanian institutions.
This move by the Mauritanian government comes amid a broader push to tighten control over customs and public transport systems, with an emphasis on transparency, uniformity, and the upholding of sovereign legal norms.
