Mali’s armed forces are stepping up counter-terrorism operations across the central and southern regions of the country, following a series of attacks claimed by the jihadist group Jama’a Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM).
The Malian General Staff (EMGA) reports successful operations in the Mopti and Nara regions, where security forces have neutralized militants, destroyed enemy camps, and seized weapons and logistical materials.
Despite persistent threats, the military says it remains committed to securing the country and dismantling terrorist networks.
On September 18, a helicopter-borne assault near the town of Koundioli Maoudé in Mopti targeted a terrorist base, EMGA confirmed. “This operation resulted in the neutralization of around ten heavily armed terrorists, the seizure of a substantial cache of arms, ammunition, and logistical equipment, and the destruction of an enemy training camp,” the statement said.
The following day, September 19, a combined air and ground operation targeted another insurgent stronghold 35 kilometres south-east of Mourdiah in Nara. Several militants were eliminated, and key infrastructure, including weapons caches, lookout posts, explosive manufacturing sites, and logistical resources, was destroyed.
Meanwhile, JNIM claimed two attacks on Malian forces on September 19.
One targeted a military convoy between Soribougou and Negala in the Koulikoro region, while the other involved an improvised explosive device in the town of Konna.
These attacks highlight the ongoing threat posed by armed groups in Mali’s central and southern regions.
EMGA emphasized that these targeted operations aim to dismantle transit camps and logistical networks responsible for violent attacks, including arson along the national N1 highway, and to prevent militant movements towards Kayes.
“These successes confirm the determination and exemplary courage of FAMA, who stand daily against barbarism,” the General Staff said. “Their constant commitment is the nation’s shield against those who seek to sow chaos.”
The military assured the public that operations to locate and destroy terrorist hideouts would continue across Mali with determination, underscoring the state’s ongoing fight against insurgent threats.
