The government of Mali has solidified its position as the majority shareholder of Sotelma-SA, renewing the company’s telecom operating license until 2039.
This agreement covers fixed and mobile networks (including 2G, 3G, and 4G), data transmission, and international services, marking a significant step for the nation’s telecommunications sector.
Following months of negotiations, the Malian government has increased its stake in Sotelma-SA to 56%, securing a majority share without any additional financial outlay.
During the latest Council of Ministers, the government also approved the renewal of Sotelma-SA’s telecommunications license.
This agreement, negotiated in collaboration with Moroccan stakeholders, extends the company’s rights to provide a wide range of telecommunications services, ensuring Mali’s continued access to modern communication infrastructure.
Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Alhamdou Ag Iliyène, who led the negotiations, hailed the agreement as a milestone for the country’s telecom industry.
He emphasized that the deal aligns with the vision of President Assimi Goïta, who actively guided the process.
In a groundbreaking move, the government also secured a remarkable sum of 160 billion CFA francs for the license agreement, a notable achievement in the region.
“The President’s leadership was pivotal in ensuring that this negotiation was not only successful but also beneficial to the country,” Minister Ag Iliyène stated.
“This agreement will not only benefit the state but also improve working conditions for Sotelma-SA employees.”
The new agreement aims to address previous challenges while steering the company towards a more sustainable and progressive future.
The government has plans to enhance working conditions, invest in infrastructure, and promote continuous employee training to improve service delivery across the country.
Minister Ag Iliyène also expressed gratitude to Mali’s Moroccan partners for their cooperation, noting that this agreement marks the beginning of a new era in the telecommunications sector for Mali.
