The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) marked a significant milestone on Friday as 835 recruits successfully completed six months of basic military training at the Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima.
The passing-out parade celebrated the culmination of intensive training designed to equip recruits with the skills necessary for national defence and service.
During the training period, recruits underwent rigorous instruction in combat marksmanship, fieldcraft, drill duties, career development, and physical fitness. The programme aimed to instil discipline, resilience, and technical competence among the new soldiers.
Addressing the graduates, MDF Commander General Paul Velentino Phiri emphasised the importance of loyalty, discipline, and integrity in military service.
“As you march off this parade ground, you step into the noble ranks of the MDF. Serve with loyalty, discipline and distinction,” he said. “Do not misuse the uniform to intimidate or oppress the people.”
General Phiri reminded the new soldiers that their primary duty is to protect and serve the communities they represent. “Earn their trust through your conduct. Let your presence inspire confidence, not fear, and be defenders—not perpetrators—of violence,” he added.
Minister of Defence Monica Chang’anamuno, guest of honour at the event, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting soldier welfare and ensuring access to adequate training resources.
“A nation that neglects its soldiers prepares for its own defeat, but a nation that honours its soldiers secures its future,” she said. “Today we honour our 835 new soldiers who have chosen noble service to our nation.”
The minister further urged the recruits to maintain the highest standards of conduct, both domestically and abroad, and to uphold the reputation of the Malawi Defence Force.
The graduation of these 835 soldiers not only strengthens the operational capacity of the MDF but also underscores Malawi’s ongoing commitment to investing in a disciplined, professional, and community-focused military. The ceremony highlighted the essential role of the armed forces in ensuring national security and promoting public trust.
