For years, sub-Saharan Africa has been a pioneer in mobile payment systems, with nations like Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania leading the charge.
Kenya’s well-known M-Pesa platform, in particular, revolutionized how millions transact, especially in areas underserved by traditional banking.
These innovations have empowered populations far from conventional financial institutions to conduct transactions easily, reducing their reliance on cash.
This success is largely driven by widespread smartphone adoption and the urgent need for faster, safer exchanges in predominantly cash-based economies.
Now, the Maghreb is following suit by embracing mobile payment technology to modernize its financial landscape.
Algeria has officially launched Barid Pay, a new mobile payment service introduced by Algérie Poste.
The platform enables users to make payments directly from their smartphones, offering a seamless alternative to cash.
Barid Pay initially targets pharmacies and small local businesses—sectors where cash remains king.
The service leverages QR code technology, allowing payments with a simple scan, requiring no expensive or complicated hardware. This simplicity is designed to make digital payments accessible to as many people as possible.
Deployment began on June 14, 2025, and is progressively expanding nationwide.
To balance convenience with security, a daily transaction limit of 500,000 Algerian dinars has been set, ensuring safe use while addressing everyday payment needs.
This rollout marks a crucial step towards broader financial inclusion in Algeria and across the Maghreb region.
By adopting electronic payments, Algeria stands to simplify commerce, cut costs associated with cash handling, and spur the growth of new digital financial services.
Such progress will enhance economic access for many citizens, reflecting a clear commitment to modernizing the country’s financial infrastructure and supporting sustainable economic development.
