Libya’s Interior Minister, Major General Imad Trabelsi, has reaffirmed the country’s rejection of plans to resettle migrants within its borders, instead highlighting ongoing efforts to facilitate their voluntary return.
Speaking at a press conference in Tripoli on Wednesday, 6 November 2024, Trabelsi outlined the government’s firm stance on the matter, emphasizing that resettling migrants inside Libya would not be permitted.
“The government will not allow the resettlement of migrants within our borders,” Trabelsi declared.
He noted that the Ministry of Interior is actively implementing a voluntary return program to help migrants in Tripoli return to their home countries.
The minister detailed a comprehensive security strategy aimed at enhancing border control, combating illegal migration, and curbing drug trafficking and criminal activity.
Securing Libya’s borders remains a central aspect of the ministry’s mission, which Trabelsi said is crucial in addressing broader security concerns and maintaining stability in the country.
He further emphasized the ministry’s commitment to tackling Libya’s ongoing fuel and gas crisis, which he described as an urgent priority requiring immediate and concerted action.
The remarks by Trabelsi underscore the Libyan government’s approach to the challenges posed by migration and border security amid continued instability in the region.
