Libyan political alliance warns against EU plans for migrant resettlement in Libya
The Gathering of Libyan Parties has voiced serious concerns over the escalating issue of irregular migration and its implications for Libya’s national security.
In a statement released today, the coalition of political factions criticized what it perceives as increasing efforts by the European Union to turn Libya into a permanent hub for migrant resettlement rather than a transit point.
The group’s remarks followed statements by Nicola Orlando, the EU Ambassador to Libya, who indicated that 87% of migrants had voluntarily returned to Libya.
However, the Gathering of Libyan Parties argues that many of these returns were enforced under a broader EU agenda to establish Libya as a migrant settlement center.
The coalition called on Libyan authorities to address this matter urgently, emphasizing the importance of upholding security measures without resorting to discrimination or inhumane treatment.
It stressed that Libya should not be burdened with the responsibility of guarding Europe’s borders at the expense of its own security and territorial sovereignty.
The issue of migration has long been a contentious one in Libya, with the latest figures indicating that over three million Africans currently reside within its borders, a number that continues to rise.
The Gathering of Libyan Parties, an alliance comprising various political groups, aims to foster national dialogue, promote political unity, and drive the country’s path toward stability and development.
As the debate over migration and Libya’s role in regional security intensifies, the group’s statement underscores growing apprehensions about the nation’s capacity to balance international demands with its own pressing challenges.
