The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called on Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibah to preserve stability in Tripoli and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the capital.
In a statement released on Sunday, UNSMIL confirmed that Special Representative of the Secretary-General Hannah Tetteh met with Dbeibah in Tripoli to discuss the country’s fragile political situation.
“The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hannah Tetteh, met yesterday, Sunday, with Dbeibah in Tripoli. Discussions addressed the political process in light of the Special Representative’s intention to announce the roadmap in the next Security Council briefing on August 21,” the mission said.
According to the statement, Tetteh stressed the urgent need to bring an end to Libya’s prolonged transitional phases and move towards national elections. She also raised concerns about the security environment in Tripoli, underlining the importance of maintaining calm and avoiding any “provocative actions that could endanger the people of Tripoli and threaten their safety.”
The talks come amid heightened political uncertainty in Libya, where disputes between rival factions and delays in the electoral process have prolonged instability. Tripoli, in particular, has witnessed periodic flare-ups of violence as armed groups compete for influence.
Tetteh’s planned roadmap, expected to be presented to the UN Security Council on 21 August, is aimed at breaking the political deadlock and setting a clear path towards elections.
UNSMIL has repeatedly urged all Libyan stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and compromise to safeguard the country’s unity and prevent further deterioration of the security situation.
