Libya’s Marine Rescue Department has issued a warning against swimming along the eastern coast due to dangerously rough sea conditions.
The alert, released on Saturday morning, cautions citizens and visitors that turbulent waters will make swimming unsafe on both Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21, 2025.
In a statement posted on its official page, the department stressed that the warning is part of its ongoing efforts to protect the public.
“The sea will be extremely rough and completely unsuitable for swimming,” the statement read.
Authorities urged parents to closely monitor their children and prevent them from approaching beaches during this period. Ignoring the advice, the department warned, could result in serious accidents or fatalities.
“The Marine Rescue Department calls on all citizens to take this warning seriously and cooperate with relevant authorities to avoid potential marine accidents,” the statement added.
Local officials said that the eastern coastal waters are expected to remain unstable through the weekend, with strong winds contributing to high waves and hazardous conditions. Maritime safety teams have been placed on alert and are patrolling affected areas to respond quickly to any emergencies.
Residents and tourists were reminded that swimming, boating, and other water-based activities should be suspended until conditions improve. The department also encouraged reporting any incidents or suspicious activities along the coastline to ensure rapid assistance.
This warning comes amid seasonal changes that often trigger rough seas in the region, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance along Libya’s popular coastal areas.
