The Coordinator of the Office of the Diaspora Liberian Community (ODLC) has called on Liberians living abroad to return home and invest, saying their participation could significantly boost economic growth and infrastructure development across the country.
Speaking after an investiture ceremony led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, ODLC Coordinator Urias Williams expressed gratitude to the Liberian leader for recognising the institution’s work in mobilising diaspora support.
“The return of Liberians from other parts of the world has the propensity to stimulate high-level economic growth and infrastructure development in the country,” Williams said.
“Therefore, I am appealing to all Liberians residing in the diaspora community to return home and invest in the local economy. We have the protection and support of this government, and so I am urging everyone to take advantage, because there is no place like home. Also, I want to thank President Boakai for honouring and recognising our efforts.”
The ODLC, based in Washington, D.C., with a local desk at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs in Monrovia, has been tasked with strengthening collaboration between Liberians abroad and the government.
The office encourages citizens in Europe, the United States, Asia, and Africa to invest in local industries and support state-led development projects.
Williams stressed that the nation’s transformation depends on Liberians taking responsibility for its growth, urging those abroad to contribute directly. He noted that the Boakai administration has elevated the diaspora office to function at the level of a deputy minister, making it “more efficient and effective.”
During the ceremony, Emmanuel Wartee received a state honour for his contributions to Liberia’s development. President Boakai commended the diaspora office for its role in rallying external support for national progress.
