Kenya’s YouTube sensation Mungai Eve has captured national attention once again, not for viral content, but for courageously revealing her struggles with depression.
The 25-year-old, born Evelyn Wanjiku Mungai, has navigated a tumultuous journey from humble beginnings in Murang’a County to digital stardom, personal heartbreak, and now, a very public battle with mental health.
Born on April 6, 2000, in Gachiku village, Mungai moved to Nairobi to pursue journalism before launching her YouTube career in January 2020.
Dropping out of her studies during the COVID-19 lockdown, she collaborated with her then-boyfriend, Director Trevor, to create engaging street interviews and content highlighting youth culture.
Her debut coverage of the Machakos Gengetone Festival in October 2020 quickly gained traction. Later that year, reporting on local artists like Madocho, Liyetin, and Stupid Boy propelled her channel into prominence.
Her support helped these talents trend nationally and secure sponsorships, cementing her reputation as a youth advocate.
By June 2021, Mungai Eve was reportedly earning over KSh 1.5 million monthly, achieving millionaire status before her 22nd birthday.
She consistently produced over 500 videos in less than a year, covering untold stories from Dandora, Mathare, Kisii, and Mombasa.
Her channel reached 100,000 subscribers in 2021 and 200,000 by 2022, launching careers for emerging artists while challenging societal stereotypes.
However, cracks in her partnership with Trevor surfaced, culminating in a split by February 2024. Trevor retained their 847,000-subscriber channel, leaving Mungai to rebrand as Kenya Online Media, now with 773,000 subscribers. The transition proved challenging, requiring her to navigate solo.
Between April and June 2025, Mungai faced her darkest period, confronting burnout and depression. In a candid Instagram Q&A on August 27, 2025, she shared her struggles, renewed faith, and decision to pause celebrity interviews to focus on healing and personal well-being.
Mungai Eve’s story reflects both the heights of digital fame and the pressures that come with it. While her rebranding journey presents challenges, her openness about mental health is resonating with fans and may inspire others facing similar struggles. At 25, her narrative of resilience suggests a potential comeback, underscoring the enduring impact of vulnerability and perseverance in the digital age.
