In a notable shift of stance, Cleophas Malala, deputy leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has endorsed the appointment of Mukhisa Kituyi as spokesperson and head of the United Opposition’s secretariat.
The announcement came on Sunday, September 7, following a period of public disagreement over the decision.
Malala had previously objected to Kituyi’s appointment, arguing that leadership positions should prioritise youth.
However, after discussions with his party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, he expressed full support for the decision, emphasising the value of integrating experienced elder statesmen with youthful leaders.
“I fully support the decision by my Party Leader and the summit leadership in integrating the elderly for experience and youth for valour, energy and creativity. I, however, remain steadfast in advocating for youthful leadership because youth is what propels nations,” Malala said.
The former Kakamega senator explained that his change of heart followed a private meeting with Gachagua, who outlined the strategic reasoning behind appointing Kituyi to head the secretariat. Gachagua stressed that the move was designed to balance experience with dynamism within the opposition as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
“The other day we appointed Mukhisa Kituyi to help us, and my deputy Malala, a capable young and good leader who helps me a lot, but he raised concerns that we chose an older person to lead the secretariat and it should be young people only to be given such opportunities,” Gachagua said.
Political analysts say Malala’s endorsement signals growing cohesion within the opposition, which has faced criticism for internal disagreements over leadership choices.
The integration of experienced figures like Kituyi alongside younger leaders such as Malala is seen as a strategic effort to present a united front and maximise both expertise and youthful energy in the lead-up to the elections.
Observers note that the United Opposition’s emphasis on blending experience with youthful dynamism may strengthen its appeal to a broader electorate, bridging generational divides and projecting readiness to govern.
Malala’s endorsement effectively resolves the earlier public dispute and underscores a commitment among opposition ranks to consolidate leadership and focus on strategic preparations for the next general election.
